Message Horsepower = (RPM * TQ) /5252

Torque is a measure of Work defined as the application of rotational force on a arm of a certain length. TQ = Force * Distance.

Horsepower is a measure of power, which is Work over a period of time. This is why, an engine with 100lb of torque, if revved high enough will make 500HP. You are applying the 100LB of torque much more quickly at high RPM, therefore increasing your HP.

They are one in the same. HP is the true determinant of power (as defined by physics books). TQ is purely the work done, no matter how long it takes.

A big tractor engine will have 1200LB of torque, but only 700HP. It just performs that 1200LB of torque work too slowly to have the same in power.

It just so happens that HP = TQ at 5252 RPM. The dyno charts will always cross at that point.
